2023 was a difficult market in many ways. Acquisitions and dollars invested along with exits and IPOs were down while capital under management continued to accumulate. As a result, the world for financial sponsors grew much more competitive, causing them to focus on building distinctive, proven competitive advantages – in raising capital, in finding deals, in exiting, and of course, in fundamental value creation.

In the face of this challenging landscape, 5 areas of focus that kept SSA & Company busy in our work with private equity firms and their portfolio companies were:

Looking to 2024, we anticipate a year of even higher volume deals fueled by growing levels of undeployed dry powder, a softer antitrust environment, and improving confidence in the financial system. We also recognize that deals of prior vintages need operational improvement to meet acquisition goals and support exit strategies. Private equity investors should consider these strategies as they look to drive growth and unlock value throughout their portfolios.
